Every year, Google invites thousands of developers, customers and journalists to its Mountain View, Calif., campus to see its latest innovations. Though the more subdued atmosphere at the tech giant following mass layoffs in January means this year’s I/O — short for input/output — is a lot smaller, expectations for the company’s offerings are higher than they’ve been in years.

Here’s what to know:

  • Google will talk about using AI in its search results. Because Google Search is the most important portal to the internet, any change will impact billions of content creators, advertisers and web surfers.
  • The company is unveiling new hardware products, including a new foldable phone. That could put pressure on Apple, which for years has fended off Google’s attempts to take away market share in the high-end smartphone market.
  • Google has told its workers to redouble their efforts to stuff AI tech into all of the company’s products. We’ll see just how far they’ve come, and whether the company has come up with new innovative ideas that its competitors haven’t yet.
