These people did not have to die

Cindy and Kyu Song Cho traveled to the Allen Premium Outlets in a suburb north of Dallas last weekend to exchange a birthday gift for their little boy William, who had just turned 6. They never made it home: A gunman killed both parents and their 3-year-old younger son, James, in the second-deadliest mass shooting this year. William was also shot but survived.

That’s one small child dead and one robbed of his family in another senseless act of violence. This toll is already too much to bear on its own. But Daniela and Sofia Mendoza, 11 and 3,respectively, there with their mother, were also murdered.

A former police officer and Army captain who arrived on the scene found a child lying in the bushes and reached to turn her head. “She had no face,” he said.

Also dead are Elio Cumana-Rivas, 32; Christian LaCour, 20; and Aishwarya Thatikonda, 26. Each of them has a story, too, and loved ones left behind.

Depending on how you define a mass shooting, the tragedy in Texas was only one of more than 200 in a still-young 2023. Narrower definitions, focusing on indiscriminate attacks in public places, nonetheless yield an ever-longer list of event after event, stolen life after stolen life. These horrors no longer come as a surprise; they’re a fact of Americans’ daily existence.

Looking at their names and faces, consider how many of them would be alive today if, like other developed countries, the United States had stronger gun laws.
